LEWISTON, Maine (September 11, 2022) – The Denison University field hockey team finished off its trip to the state of Maine with a 6-0 loss at Bates College on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.
Bates was coming off a 2-1 win at home over No. 6 nationally-ranked Bowdoin College in its NESCAC opener on Saturday, and after scoring a pair of first-quarter goals in that one, Bates kept it going with a first-quarter goal just three minutes into the game against Denison.
After attempting five shots in the first quarter, the second quarter saw Bates find the back of the net on three of its five attempts, the last two of which came right after a penalty corner, all while still keeping Denison from getting off an attempt.
Athena Joannou made three saves for Denison during a six-shot third quarter for Bates, and then she added two more saves in the fourth quarter as she finished with six saves for the game.
Rachel Gilio added a defensive save for Denison in the 36th minute.
In the 51st minute, Denison was awarded its first penalty corner of the game, taken by
Kate Hinshaw, and Denison's first shot of the game came off the stick of
Madeleine Hunt but was saved by the Bates' goalkeeper Grace Biddle.
In the 53rd minute,
Katie Teates had a strong shot that was again saved by Biddle.
In what was the first ever meeting between Denison and Bates, the Big Red dropped to 1-2 overall while the Bobcats improved to 3-0.
Next up, Denison will return home to welcome North Coast Athletic Conference foe Earlham College into Deeds Field-Piper Stadium for some nonconference action starting at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14. In 2021, the Big Red fell at home to the Quakers in a shootout during the regular season before bouncing back to win in a shootout at Earlham during the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament.
