Game Recap: Softball |

Softball eliminated from day one of NCAC Tourney

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (May 7, 2022) – The third-seeded Denison University softball team's 2022 season came to a close on Saturday following a 12-4 loss in six innings to second-seeded Hiram College and a 11-2 loss also in six innings against top-seeded and No. 6 nationally-ranked DePauw University at the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Greencastle, Indiana.

Game 1 (Denison 4, Hiram 12)
  • In the tournament opener, Denison found itself behind 3-0 after the second inning and was held without a hit until the fourth inning.
  • To start off the fourth inning, Maggie Ballentine singled to center field, Jessica Hopkins singled to shortstop and Annabelle Calderon was hit by a pitch for the second time in game, this time loading the bases with nobody out for Caitlin Ellwanger.
  • Ellwanger singled to score Ballentine, and then a one-out single through the right side by Sam Kline scored Hopkins to get Denison to within one at 3-2.
  • Kline would add a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning, but unfortunately, the third four-hit inning of the game for Hiram in the bottom of the fifth brought in four more runs before a big five-run, seven-hit inning in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early.
  • Kline finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

Game 2 (Denison 2, DePauw 11)
  • The Tigers turned to ace pitcher Cami Henry (24-6), who limited the Big Red to five hits, two runs and four walks in six innings.
  • Denison was able to push across a run against Henry in the top of the first inning as Claire Powell led off with a walk and was followed by back-to-back singles by Ballentine and Hopkins to load the bases.
  • Then with two outs, Jacqui Abogado walked to score Powell for the first run of the game, but the Tigers answered in the bottom half of the first with a pair of walks to lead off the inning followed by an error to score their first run.
  • That was followed up by a two-run single and then a two-run home run to make it 5-1 DePauw after the first inning.
  • Another Denison error led to an unearned run for DePauw in the second inning before Hopkins hit a solo home run to make it 6-2 in the top of the third inning.
  • After leaving the bases loaded back in the first inning, the Big Red would strand a two-out single by Ellwanger in the third, a one-out walk by Abogado in the fourth, a one-out single by Hopkins in the fifth, and a leadoff walk by Abogado in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles for DePauw followed by a two-run home run was all she wrote for Denison's season.
  • Hopkins was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Abogado walked twice and added an RBI as well.

Records:
  • Denison ends its season at 19-22 overall.
  • Hiram (23-13) defeated the College of Wooster (18-22) 3-0 to advance to the NCAC Tournament Championship game, where it awaits the winner of Wooster and No. 6 DePauw (32-18).
