GETTYSBURG, Pa. (May 21, 2022) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team had their NCAA Tournament run come to an end on Saturday afternoon following a 17-9 loss at No. 4 Gettysburg College in the third round of the NCAA Tournament hosted at Clark Field. The Big Red ended their ninth year under Head Coach
Amanda Daniels with a 12-7 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the seventh time in school history and for the fourth season in a row.
The Big Red were right with the Bullets down only 4-3 after the first quarter thanks to two goals by
Anna Devuono and one by
Casey McTague, but a 6-0 second quarter and an 8-0 run in all between the middle quarters for Gettysburg put the game out of reach heading into the fourth quarter.
After both times had seven shot attempts in the first quarter, Denison was outshot 19-4 over the next two quarters and was only 5-for-10 on clears during that time. The Big Red were also outshot 10-1 and committed eight turnovers in the third quarter.
Gettysburg went a perfect 18-for-18 on clears and committed just seven turnovers while forcing the Big Red into 20 giveaways and a 13-for-20 showing on clear attempts. However, it was Denison which claimed a 17-14 edge in draw controls and was 4-for-5 on free position shots.
In goal,
Caroline O'Dea played the entire second half and allowed seven goals while finishing with nine saves, including six saves in the third quarter alone.
Denison did outscore Gettysburg 5-1 to start the fourth quarter to get the score to 13-8 with 6:42 left to play.
Josie Lucchesi matched McTague with two goals during Denison's six-goal fourth quarter.Â
Annie Rau finished with two caused turnovers and two groundballs while
Ana Ortiz DeRosa had four draw controls and two groundballs as well.
McTague finished with three goals and had a career-high nine draw controls. In 18 games during her senior season, McTague scored three or more goals 14 times, including in each of the last five games of the season, and had two or more goals all but once.
McTague's 68 goals scored this season ranks fourth in program history while her 161 career goals ranks fifth. In draw controls, McTague ranks third for her career (198) while her single-season total this year of 77 draw controls ranks sixth.
