ALLIANCE, Ohio (March 22, 2022) – The Denison University softball team dropped its final two games before its 2022 home opener this week. The Big Red lost game one at the University of Mount Union 8-0 in five innings before falling 8-1 in game number two at 23rd Street Softball Field on Tuesday.
Â
Game 1 (Denison 0, Mount Union 8):
- Mount Union got a two-RBI triple in the first inning and proceed to score seven runs in the first three innings before scoring the final run on a bunt single to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
- The bottom of the third inning for the Purple Raiders featured three runs on zero hits and four Denison fielding errors.
- The Big Red, meanwhile, managed only three hits in the game, two of which came from Claire Powell, who led off the game with a triple to right center but was stranded at third.
- In the top of the third inning, Denison loaded the bases with nobody out as Macie Harkovich led off with a walk and Jessica Hopkins and Powell both singled. Unfortunately, Harkovich was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly out to right field by Maggie Ballentine before a lineout to center field by Jacqui Abogado ended the threat.
Â
Game 2 (Denison 1, Mount Union 8):
- Just like it did in game one, Mount Union scored three runs in the first inning of game two and had seven runs within the first three innings.
- Denison's only run of the day came in the second inning when Sam Kline doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a single up the middle by Allie Kovatch and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Abby Arabia.
- In the end, the Purple Raiders finished with four doubles, three triples and a home run in game two.
- Hopkins finished 2-for-3 for the Big Red.
