GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 2, 2022) – The final nonconference game of the 2022 regular season for the Denison University field hockey team saw
Madeleine Hunt record her fourth game-winning goal of the season as the Big Red improved to 5-0 at home with a 1-0 win over Centre College on Sunday inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. It was also Denison's third straight shutout win on the season and fourth in its last five games.
Denison (6-3 overall) outshot Centre (5-4) 5-3 in the first three quarters and allowed only one shot on goal while its best chance to score in the first 45 minutes came on a breakaway by
Kristin Kelley in the 38th minute, but after her shot was saved by Centre's Carlie McKenry, the deflection went straight back to Hunt, whose shot attempt was also saved.
Then five minutes into the fourth quarter, a penalty corner by
Kate Hinshaw went to
Abigail Hano, who passed it over to Hunt, who then fired an absolute laser beam straight into the goal. In addition to being her sixth goal of the season and fourth game-winning goal, the goal was Hunt's third game-winning goal scored in the fourth quarter or later so far this season.
Just over a minute later, Hunt almost did it again as Hinshaw's pass from the penalty corner went straight to Hunt, who had a good look but missed just wide this time around.
Centre tried to find the equalizer with a pair of shots on goal in the 55th and 57th minutes, respectively, but
Athena Joannou and the Big Red defense were up for the challenge as a defensive save by Hunt was followed by a goalie save by Joannou to help preserve Joannou's fifth shutout of the season.
Next up, Denison will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action next weekend as the Big Red head to Delaware, Ohio, to face Ohio Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, before returning home the next day for Senior Day against Allegheny College.
