SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Denison softball closed out their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a pair of losses, 10-0 and 4-3, at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Game 1
- In the opening game of the doubleheader, Wittenberg recorded 10 runs on 11 hits, including six runs in the fourth inning. The Tigers tallied three RBI base hits in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Katelyn Niswonger. Niswonger also earned the win in the circle with four strikeouts and three walks in five complete innings.
- Freshman Lexi Knipp started in the circle for DU and allowed five earned runs on seven hits with a strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.
- At the plate, Caitlin Ellwanger finished the game 1-for-1 with a walk while Sam Kline and Gabi Dufresne also recorded hits for the Big Red.
Game 2
- In game two, the Big Red offense jumped out early in the top of the first when Knipp connected on a two-run double to left field, scoring Kline and Taylor Faulkenberg to put Denison in front, 2-0.
- After the Tigers evened up the score at 2-2 in the home half of the first, the Big Red bats returned in the top of the third when Kline scored on an RBI double from Dufresne to give DU their second lead of the game, 3-2.
- Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Wittenberg broke the tie when Elaina Adams drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly, securing the second win of the day for the Tigers.
- Kline and Dufresne led DU with a pair of 2-for-4 performances with Kline posted two runs and Dufresne driving one in. Sophomore Abby Arabia finished the game 2-for-3 while Knipp led the Big Red with two RBI.
- Knipp and Noelle Chovanec pitched three innings each for the Big Red, combining for two earned runs, five hits, and two strikeouts.
Saturday's doubleheader marked the end of the 2021 season for the Big Red, where they finished with an overall record of 7-20, including a 4-8 mark in conference play.
