Softball drops doubleheader at MSJ

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Denison softball traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon where they suffered back-to-back losses to Mount St. Joseph University, 4-3 and 9-7, at the Kinder Morgan Softball Complex.

Game 1
  • After the Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the first inning of game one, the Big Red began chipping away at their deficit in the second inning when senior Gabi Dufresne connected on a homerun over the left center field wall to make it a 3-1 game after two innings of play. Denison added two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Sam Kline and an RBI double off the bat of Clara Wolff, tying the game at 3-3.
  • MSJ broke the tie in the home half of the fifth when Olivia Burger scored Ali Lang with a single to left, giving the Lions the lead back at 4-3 after five. The Big Red put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but were unable to drive them in as DU suffered their fourth loss of the season.
  • In the pitching circle, Taylor Faulkenberg tallied four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts through six innings of work. Dufresne led the DU bats with two runs scored and an RBI.

Game 2
  • In game two, Denison manufactured some early runs in the top of the first when Kline tallied her second and third RBI's of the day on a single to right center, putting the Big Red ahead, 2-0. After Dufresne walked in a run in the top of the second to give DU a 3-0 lead, the Lions used the next four innings to produce eight unanswered runs, including four runs in the fourth and a two-run homer from Alehia Tucker.
  • Trailing 8-3 in the top of the sixth, the Big Red bats made one final push at MSJ with four runs in the frame, including another two-run single from Kline to cut Denison's deficit to one, 8-7. Kline finished the day with a total of five RBI's and three hits.
  • Despite DU's late rally, the Lions added another run in the home half of the sixth and held off the Big Red in the seventh for their ninth win of the season. Denison moved to 1-5 with the loss.

The Big Red will return to action this Saturday, March 27 when they travel to Hiram College for a doubleheader matchup with the Terriers. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. with game two to follow at 3 p.m. Hiram is currently not allowing visiting team fans at their home events, but they will be offering a live video stream of both games.
