GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 3, 2021) – Despite outshooting the opposition 22-2 overall, the top-seeded Denison University women's soccer team fell 1-0 against fourth-seeded Wittenberg University during the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Wednesday night on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
The Big Red outshot Wittenberg 8-0 in the first half and 14-2 in the second, and allowed only one shot on goal throughout the entire night.
That one shot on goal for Wittenberg, however, would be the difference in the match as the Tigers' Amy Bidwill was able to just chip it over the keeper in the 56th minute on what was also Wittenberg's first shot of the match.
From that point on, Denison hoisted 13 more shot attempts over the final 34-plus minutes of the match.
Starting in the 63rd minute,
Callie Davis and
Caroline Flynn both shot high before Flynn put a shot on target that was saved.
Then, starting in the 72nd minute, the Big Red fired four shots in a row as
Sydney Ludes's attempt was blocked,
Eliza Roach and
Abby King both had a shot saved, and then King followed up her shot with another that went wide right.
Denison had one last chance to tie it in the 86th minute, but
Ellie Reiser's shot was blocked before
Leland Keller's was wide left.
King and Davis led the Big Red with four shot attempts while
Amy Chiero and Roach both had three and Reiser,
Sophia Connell and Flynn each had two.
With the loss, Denison fell to 11-5 overall while Wittenberg improved to 9-8-1 and will advance to the tournament championship on Saturday at the College of Wooster.
