Big Red third after day one at NCACs

The Denison women's track and field team scored 43 points through the first seven events at the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship. With that point total, DU will enter the final day of the event in third place.

The Big Red's point total came by way of six top-5 performances on Friday in Delaware, Ohio. Junior Aedin Brennan led the way with 12 points in two events. Brennan finished runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 18'3.75". She opened the day with a fifth-place showing in the javelin with a mark of 109'9". In addition to performances in the field-event finals, Brennan also qualified for two running events on Saturday. The junior All-American won the 400-meter prelims with a time of 57.79. Brennan also qualified for the 200 dash finals after placing fifth in the preliminaries (25.80).

Junior Kate Benson and senior Abbi Boss bookended Friday's running events with third-place performances. Benson, last week's NCAC Distance Runner of the Week, ran a personal-record time of 11:37.70 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to open the day. Boss closed out Friday by taking third in the 10,000-meter run after crossing the line in 40:05.46. Both athletes earned their first all-conference honor.

Rounding out the scoring were senior Kristen Geary and freshman Allison Pineault. Both pole vaulters successfully cleared 9'6.25" to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place with Wooster's Jocelyn Lion.

Junior Rebecca Fritch and freshman Jessica Nix each posted personal-best times in their respective events. Fritch PRed in the discus with a toss of 106'4". That performance was a 2'9" improvement from her previous top mark. Nix ran her fastest time in the prelims of the 100 hurdles after completing the race in 16.83. The freshman shaved 42 hundredths of a second off her previous PR time.

The host Battling Bishops will enter the final day of the championship event in first place with 102 points. Oberlin sits second with 49 tallies, six points ahead of the Big Red. Allegheny is fourth at 43 points, while Wooster (28), Wittenberg (8), Kenyon (6) and DePauw (4) round out the team standings.

Denison will close out the 2015 NCAC Outdoor Championship on Saturday at the George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio. Field events will begin at 10 a.m., while the first running event is slated to start at 2:25 p.m.
