The Denison women's track and field team will enter the final day at the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship in third place after compiling 29 points on Friday in Gambier, Ohio.
Less than a week removed from capturing her second NCAC Combined Events crown, freshman Aedin Brennan continued her solid debut season. Brennan opened Friday's events with a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 35-06.75. The rookie followed that up with a victory in the long jump. Brennan captured her fourth NCAC title with a school-record leap of 17'10.75", an inch farther than the previous record set by the freshman at last weekend's NCAC Heptathlon.
Also helping the Big Red cause were sophomore Kristen Geary, junior Olivia Galano and senior Anne McGinty. Geary finished sixth in the pole vault after clearing 9'6.25" during the afternoon session on Friday. Galano and McGinty teamed up to score four points in the 10,000-meter event. Galano completed the race in 39:28.03 en route to a sixth-place finish, while McGinty finished eighth with a time of 39:39.45.
In Friday's preliminary races, Denison had three athletes qualify for four events on Saturday. Reigning NCAC Sprinter of the Year Tiffany Davis won both the 100 and 200-meter prelims. Davis posted a time of 12.49 in the 100 and finished the 200 in 25.04. The junior's 200 time was 84 hundredths of a second faster than the second-place time turned in by Oberlin's Sophia Brancazio. Additionally, Davis finished 29 hundredths of a second before Brancazio in the 100 dash.
In addition to her impressive performance in the field, Brennan also had a solid day in two sprint events. Along with Davis, Brennan also qualified for Saturday's 200-meter dash final after recording a PR time of 26.51. In the 400, the freshman finished runner-up in the prelims with a time of 58.66. That time ranks Brennan second on DU's top performers list.
Freshman Emily Lamm qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run on Friday. Lamm secured her spot in the finals with a personal-best time of 2:19.38, which landed her second in her heat and fourth overall. The first-year runner posted the second-best time in the event.
Ohio Wesleyan leads the eight-team field with 73 points, while Oberlin (49), Denison, DePauw (19.5) and Wittenberg (11) round out the top five.
Saturday's field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m., while the running events are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
