The Denison women's outdoor track and field team put together a solid performance at the Washington & Lee Carnival this weekend in Lexington, Va.
DU was led by freshman Aedin Brennan's second-place finish in the heptathlon. Brennan accumulated a school-record 4,205 points over the course of the two-day events. Day one of the event was highlighted by a trio of top-five finishes for the rookie. She finished tied for fourth in the high jump (5-01), second in the shot put (32-02.50) and completed the first day with a fifth-place showing in the 200-meter dash (26.76).
Brennan opened day two with a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 15-09.75. She followed that up with a third-place finish in the javelin (87-08). Brennan closed out the event with a victory in the 800-meter run. The freshman crossed the finish line in 2:26.88.
First-year Emily Lamm recorded a pair of top-10 finishes. Lamm was fifth in the 1500-meter event after clocking in at 4:52.72. That time ranks her seventh on the school's top performers list. She also placed ninth in the 800 with a time of 2:22.44. Lamm's classmate, Kiki Yewer, logged three top-15 performances over the course of two days. Yewer took 10th in the triple jump with a combined leap of 29-08.25. On Saturday, the rookie sprinter finished 13th and 15th in the 100 (13.34) and 200-meter (27.11) events, respectively.
Olivia Galano, Abbi Boss, Sarah McKendry, Brooke Demarest and Mollie Evans all had successful outings in the distance events. In the 5,000, Galano placed seventh with a time of 18:42.89, which ranks her 8th on DU's all-time performers list. Boss trailed Galano in 11th with a time of 18:59.25.
McKendry paced a trio of DU runners in the 10,000-meter event. The rookie took eighth in the event with a time of 39:56.83. That finish landed her in ninth place on DU's top performers list. Demarest (42:06.24) and Evans (42:14.07) finished in 15th and 16th, respectively, in the event.
In the field events, sophomore Kristen Geary placed fifth in the pole vault after clearing 9-00.25. First-year Rebecca Fritch finished ninth after tossing the discus 100'01". Fritch's toss ranks her ninth on the top performers list.
Denison also had a pair of 4x800 relay teams finish fifth and sixth on Saturday afternoon. The foursome of Lamm, Beth Armitage, Boss and Ashley Bartreau combined for a time of 10:15.03, which ranks them fourth all-time in school history. The grouping of Galano, Wendy Geslewitz, Gwen Gunter and Anne McGinty followed with a time of 10:44.51.
The Big Red returns to action on Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Mini Invitational.
