Denison junior Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) defended his title in the men's 3,000 meter run highlighting the final day of competition at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship from Oberlin College. As a team, the Big Red placed sixth with 35 team points.
Salukombo covered the 3K race in 8:37.13, besting his winning time from 2010 by more than four seconds. His performance in the 3,000 and his second-place finish in the mile would earn him the 2011 NCAC Distance Runner of the Year award. This is the second Runner of the Year award earned by Salukombo. He took home the award at last year's NCAC Outdoor Championship at Ohio Wesleyan.
In the men's mile, Salukombo was the runner-up to last year's Distance Runner of the Year, Allegheny's Tony Dipre. Both runners would log NCAA provisional qualifying times and Salukombo just missed his own school record with a time of 4:12.93.
Salukombo is the 13th male athlete to log either Runner or Field Athlete of the Year at the NCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Other top performers for DU included Steven Gallego's (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan [Conn.]) seventh-place finish in the men's weight throw. Gallego threw the 35 lb weight 42'5.5" which is a new school record.
The 4x200 relay team of Michael Cohen (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas), Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/North), Jon Brachna (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) and Win Fox (Lancaster, Ohio/Columbus Academy) placed fifth in 1:35.02. In the final race of the championship the same foursome placed sixth in 3:30.46.
The team championship went to Wabash College who finished with 208 points, edging Ohio Wesleyan, who placed second, with 202 points.
