Junior Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood), sophomore Stephen Czujko (Silver Spring, Mass./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and freshman Jon Brachna (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) all logged victories to pace the Denison University men's indoor track and field squad at the unscored Kenyon College Classic on Saturday afternoon from Gambier, Ohio.
Salukombo won the mile run with a time of 4:21.78, which was almost three seconds faster than runner-up Matt Davis of Kenyon. Czujko picked up a first-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:01.92) after crossing the line exactly one second ahead of the Lords' Sean Edelman. Brachna logged the third DU victory in the 400-meter dash. The rookie clocked in at 53.57, just in front of teammate Win Fox (Lancaster, Ohio/Columbus Academy) who finished second with a time of 54.03.
Junior Alexander Chappars (Xenia, Ohio/Bellbrook) also picked up a second-place finish after posting a time of 15;25.96 in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Irwin Castro (Los Angeles, Calif./Belmont Sr.) took third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.48, while senior Todd Johnson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) and junior Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) finished fourth in the 800 (2:05.20) and 200 (24.16), respectively. Sophomore Joe Nichols (Detroit, Mich./Cranbrook) took fifth in the 55-meter dash after crossing the line in 7.11.
In the 4x400 relay, the team of Brachna, Effinger, Fox and Salukombo took second with a time of 3:32.36. The foursome's time was just nine one-hundredths behind the winning team from Kenyon.
The Big Red return to competition on Friday (Feb. 25) when they host the Denison Last Chance Meet.
