The Denison University Big Red competed at the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Washington, Pa. Denison got solid performances from junior Ashley Putnam (North East, Pa./North East) and first-year Anne McGinty (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) en route to an eighth-place finish.
In the 800-meter run, Putnam turned in a second-place finish with a time of 2:23.80, while sophomore Anelia Mutafova (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) took fifth in the race with a mark of 2:28.49. McGinty led the DU in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:28.98, which was good enough for third place. Trailing McGinty were Victoria Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) and Victoria Stearns (Plymouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) who finished the event in fifth (20:54.84) and sixth (21:07.92), respectively.
Senior Emily Taylor (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and sophomore Katherine Sylvia (Butler, Pa./Butler) paced the Big Red in the field events. Taylor took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 34-09.00, while Sylvia finished sixth in the event with a distance of 33-04.50. Sylvia and Taylor returned to take fifth (110-08) and eighth (104-11), respectively, in the discus. Ashlee Dickson (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) also took sixth in the pole vault after a successful clear of 9-02.25.
Denison returns to competition on Saturday (April 10) when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for the Marv Frye Invitational.
