The Denison women posted three first-place finishes on Friday night at the unscored Big Red Invitational from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Senior Emily Taylor (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) won the shot put with a throw of 37'1" and teammate Katherine Sylvia (Butler, Pa./Butler) followed in second-place with a distance of 35'1". In the pole vault, senior Emily Hammeren (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) cleared 10'1.50" to edge Kenyon freshman Ramelle Brown by 1.5". The Big Red's third win came from sophomore Ani Mutafova (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) who placed first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:55.60.
In the women's hammer throw senior Emily Handelman (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) placed second with a distance of 99'8" and Sylvia followed in third place. In the 400 meter dash it was junior Ashley Putnam (North East, Pa./North East) who took second with a time of 1:02.54 and first-year Katherine Ireland (Evanston, Ill./Loyola Academy) also logged a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.82. First-year Julie Cantelon (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) rounded out DU's top-performers with a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meters.
DU will return to action next weekend at the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship from Ohio Wesleyan University.
