GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Big Red volleyball team got back in the win column with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-20) win over Franciscan University on Tuesday night.
After a close battle early, Denison erupted for a 22-6 run that left no doubt in what turned out to be a dominating opening set. The Big Red's 5-1 burst forced the Lady Barons to burn their first timeout, while a 7-2 surge out of the stoppage resulted in Franciscan calling their final timeout of the set. DU closed out the set with a 10-3 run that was capped off by back-to-back service aces from Sidney Gossard. The home team committed just one miscue in a 13-kill performance. Senior Alex Tubbs paced the scoring with four kills and a block assist.
Like the first, the Big Red quickly turned a 3-2 edge into a 9-4 lead, forcing the visitors to call a timeout. The stoppage didn't halt Denison's momentum as they continued the offensive attack with a 7-1 burst that resulted in an 11-point lead and another Franciscan timeout. DU led by as many as 15 (20-5) on their way to a 14-point victory. For the second-straight set, Denison recorded 13 kills on 27 attempts with just one error (.444). Freshman Carly Tenaglia recorded five finishers in the second.
With a commanding two-set lead, Denison head coach Carter Cassell tweaked the lineup, starting two new players. Things started off a little slow, but, following a Denison timeout, a 12-2 run saw the Big Red's eight-point deficit become a two-point edge (14-12). Coming out of a Franciscan stoppage, the Lady Barons rattled off five-straight to regain a three-point lead. However, an 11-3 match-ending run got Denison back in the win column. The final surge featured kills from Gossard, Olivia Burnside (two) and Natalie Hutras. Tenaglia also registered consecutive aces late in the set.
Gossard led all scorers with 12 points behind nine kills and three service aces. Tenaglia finished with seven kills, two aces and a block assist, while Tubbs had six kills and four total blocks (one solo, three assists). Libero Jenna Corrao collected 19 digs, while setter Sophie Tight handed out 33 assists.
Meghan Bayer paced Franciscan with 10 kills and 11 digs.
The Big Red (14-6) continues non-conference action on Thursday (Oct. 17) when they travel to Marietta for a 7 p.m. match.
