WOOSTER, Ohio – Denison volleyball suffered their first loss since Sept. 10 on Saturday afternoon following a 3-1 defeat (25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 21-25) at the hands of the College of Wooster at Timken Gymnasium. The loss snapped Denison's 10-match winning streak which was the most since 1993.

In the first set, the Big Red looked to continue their hot stretch through 2019 as they opened the match with a 10-7 lead behind multiple kills from Payton McElfresh. After the Scots trimmed their deficit to 11-10 on consecutive kills from Hayley Nash and Anna Medema, the Big Red rallied with 15 of the final 23 points on finishes from McElfresh, Emma Woerner, Sidney Gossard to take an early 1-0 set lead.

The momentum remained with Denison to begin the second set as they took a 16-12 advantage after Woerner and Lucy Anderson logged multiple kills. Wooster turned the tide with a 9-2 scoring run that put the Scots ahead 21-18 and forced a Big Red timeout. Back-to-back kills from Anderson trimmed DU's deficit to 24-23, but Wooster's Nash posted the final kill of the set to tie the match at 1-1.

The Scots stayed in control in the third set as they tallied a .375 hit percentage and took an early 12-7 lead on three-straight service aces from Katie Billetdeaux. A kill from McElfresh and a service ace from Woerner helped DU close their deficit to 22-21, but the Scots connected on their final three kill attempts to enter the fourth set with a 2-1 lead.

In the final set, the Big Red came back from an early 9-6 deficit to tie the match at 9-9 on kills from Alex Tubbs and Gossard. The Scots followed with four-straight points and built their lead to 20-14.

Trailing 23-18, the Big Red climbed back on three Wooster errors and only trailed by two, 23-21, as they forced a Scots' timeout. Despite the comeback, the Scots finished the match on an Emily Gail kill and an ace from Medema to drop the Big Red to 13-6 overall and 4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Woerner and Anderson led Denison with 12 kills each while Anderson added a match-high eight blocks (1 solo, 7 assists). Sophie Tight and McElfresh chipped in 17 digs apiece while Tight paced DU with 34 assists. Medema and Nash combined for 31 finishes for Wooster. Sydney Fitzcharles added a match-best 24 digs and Meghan Botsch led the day with 45 assists.

Denison returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 12 when the Big Red host Franciscan at 7 p.m.
