Denison men compete at Oberlin Fall Invite

OBERLIN, Ohio – Denison men's tennis continued their fall season this past weekend as they competed at the 2019 Oberlin College Fall Invitational held in Oberlin, Ohio.

Led by 16 combined victories between the doubles and singles courts, the Big Red found their most success in doubles action where they went 7-2 throughout the weekend, including a perfect 3-0 mark from sophomore Tim Cianciola and freshman Jack Bulger. In their opening round, Cianciola and Bulger posted an 8-5 victory over Carnegie Mellon's Matthew Poh and Leo Wang before taking down Chaitanya Aduru and John Kasner of Case Western Reserve 8-5 in round two. The duo completed their flight title following an 8-3 defeat of Tiffin's Nikita Parfenov and Michael Gurtner.

Jacob Dennen and John Purnode kept DU's first-round victories alive when they defeated Hoang Do and Vinh Thai of Ohio Northern, 8-3. After a second-round loss to Ashland's Kun Teng Tche and Hung Huynh, 8-3, the combo rebounded to take down Sam Topper and Sean Billerbeck from Oberlin, 8-5.

Vlad Rotnov and Brian Weisberg also opened doubles play with a victory, defeating CWRU's Aris Jhaveri and Austin Lawrence 8-7 (7-3) before posting an 8-6 second-round win over Max Vicario and Michael Sutanto. The pair closed out doubles play with an 8-5 loss to Henry Squire and Diego Maza of Case Western.

In singles action, Bulger went undefeated for Denison thanks to wins over Parfenov (6-1, 6-2), Jhaveri (2-6, 6-1, 10-7), and Kasner (6-2, 6-1). The Big Red earned five first-round victories in total, including a win from Dennen over Tiffin's Gabe Oliveira 6-1, 6-2. He also won his semifinal match over Case Western's Lawrence (6-1, 6-3), but suffered a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 loss to Maza in the title match.

Cianciola rallied from a second-round loss to defeat Oberlin's Stephen Gruppuso 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation bracket, while Rotnov and Hayden McNamara each tallied victories in the first round.

The Big Red will round out the fall season on October 4-6 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete in the 2019 ITA Central Regional Championships.
