GRANVILLE, Ohio -- On a day where the Big Red honored their six graduating seniors, Denison volleyball defeated Allegheny College in three straight sets (25-17, 25-10, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium.
Riding high off the energy from the pregame senior day festivities, DU opened an early 5-2 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from junior Isabella Pivec. Points by Grace Lengauer and Leah Franzluebbers helped the Gators shrink the margin to 14-12, but kills from seniors Leah Reinfranck and Kristin Thewes helped the Big Red rattle off six straight points and secure the first set victory, 25-17.
After kills from Emma Woerner and Katie Aucamp helped Denison charge out to a 10-3 lead in the second set, Allegheny committed 11 total errors in the set as Katie Kerrigan's set-sealing kill gave the Big Red a 2-0 advantage entering the third set.
Denison started the final set with a 7-3 lead, but DU errors assisted the Gators with their next five points to tighten the match at 9-9. Kills from Woerner and sophomore Alex Tubbs allowed the Big Red to string together three-straight points on three separate occasions in the third set as DU finished the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Reinfranck led the way for the Big Red with nine kills, while Tubbs finished right behind her with eight to help DU post a hitting percentage of .278. Kaileigh Poe and Julia Miller paced Denison with a combined 30 assists as Thewes led the match with 16 digs. Allegheny's Franzluebbers and Lengauer tied for a team-best with seven kills each while Justine Kelly's 18 assists were a match-best.
Prior to the match, the Big Red honored seniors Poe, Reinfranck, Thewes, Kathlyn Craigie, Hannah Glick and Kristen Brennan for their contributions to the program over the last four years. The group has totaled 51 wins during their time in Granville and top-five finishes each of the last three years in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Denison will return to Livingston Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 17 as they host Oberlin College in their home finale. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
