GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Denison currently sits in a tie for seventh place after the opening day of the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Friday. The Big Red has accumulated 13 points through seven events, tying host DePauw.
Oberlin currently leads the eight-time defending champions, Ohio Wesleyan, after amassing 95 points after seven events. The Bishops sit in second place with 70.5 points.
Junior Arlesha Cospy paced Denison on Friday with an all-conference performance in the shot put. Cospy placed third in the event with a personal-best toss of 40'7.75". That mark came in her second attempt in the preliminaries and bested her previous PR by 1'50". Earlier in the day, Cospy scored in the hammer throw, finishing eighth with a heave of 131'8".
Sophomore Alyssa Bahel and senior Anne Lee also scored for the Big Red. Bahel closed out the first day of the championship meet with a seventh-place showing in the 10,000-meter run. The sophomore finished the race in 40:42.73. Lee opened her final conference meet with an eighth-place finish after posting a personal-best mark. The senior's leap of 16'3.75" surpassed her personal record by three quarters of an inch.
In preliminary action, freshman Bren'et Muldrow advanced to Saturday's final in the 400-meter dash after posting the fifth-fastest time. Muldrow was third in her heat with a time of 1:01.14. Fellow freshman Sydney Chandler will also be competing on Saturday in the 400 hurdles. Because there were only eight entrants in the event, Chandler and the other seven participants moved onto Saturday without having to compete in a preliminary race.
Junior Jessica Nix narrowly missed the finals of the 100 hurdles, finishing with a time of 16.80. That time was just two tenths of a second behind the eighth-and-final spot occupied by Ohio Wesleyan senior MaryKate Caja. Sophomore Mackenzie Mason also had a ninth-place finish in the pole vault after successfully clearing 8'9".
