Senior Ashley Putnam's (North East, Pa./North East) first-place finish in the 500-meter run helped the Denison University women's track and field squad take third at the Capital Crusader Invitational on Friday evening from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.
Denison finished in third place out of 11 teams at the Capital Crudsader Invite after totaling 56.5 points. Putnam finished the 500 with a time of 12:23.77. Trailing Putnam in the event were Ellen Fugate (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Laura Houcque (Elkhorn, Wis./Evanston Township [Ill.]). Fugate finished fourth with a time of 1:31.42, while Houcque took fifth clocking in at 1:34.81. Junior Ani Mutafova (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) logged a second-place finish in the mile after crossing the line at 5:34.92, while Beth Armitage (Vienna, Va./James Madison) took third (2:34.60) in the 800-meter run.
In the field events, Claire Navarro (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) finished tied for fourth with a leap of 14-09.25, while Maddie Johnston (Chesterfield, Mo./MICDS) had a distance of 28-06.25 en route to a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. In the pole vault, Ashlee Dickson (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) took sixth after clearing 9-00.25.
Denison also faired well in the relay events. The 4x400 squad finished third after clocking in at 4:43.64, while the 4x200 foursome of Liz Arnold (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Mutafova, Navarro and Putnam took fifth. The 4x200 grouping completed the event in 1:57.93.
The Big Red return to action next Saturday (Feb. 19) when they compete at Kenyon College.
