Denison suffered a 5-4 loss to Division II Ashland University on Tuesday afternoon in Granville. Despite getting to play on their outdoor court for the first time this season, losing two of three doubles matches along with a retirement at No. 1 singles would be the difference in the match.
In doubles play, Denison's Kelsey Geppner and Taylor Hawkins defeated Ashland's Zdenka Pozo and Andrea Ruiz, 8-2, at first doubles. After losses at second and third doubles, Denison trailed 2-1 heading into singles play.
The deficit got larger when Geppner was forced to retire to Pozo after falling 6-1 in the first set. Emily Holloway would get DU back in the win column with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Meghann Fitzpatrick at No. 4. In the second flight, Hawkings topped Pyper Brown 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 3-3.
Ashland's Ruiz would top Meg Chiumento, 6-2, 6-3 in the third flight. The clincher for the Eagles would come in the fifth flight when Daniela Alves dropped Eleni Coleman, 6-1, 7-5. Despite the team loss, Denison's fourth point would come from Sarah Torrence in the sixth flight, 6-3, 7-5.
Denison falls to 1-3 while Ashland improves to 10-10. The Big Red will return to action on March 17 when they take on Bowdoin in Claremont, Calif.
