Big Red tops Gustavus in Madison

Denison women's tennis won its final match at the 2013 Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wis. as they edged Gustavus Adolphus, 5-4.  After losses to No. 13 Washington University and regionally ranked Carleton on Friday, DU returns to Granville with an 11-4 record.

The match started unconventionally with singles play and the points were split 3-3. All three of DU's points came from their top-3 singles players, Kelsey Geppner, Alex Marcell and Meg Chiumento. At first singles, Geppner went three sets to defeat Krebsbach, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, and knot things up heading into the decisive three doubles matches.

At first doubles, Marcell and Geppner knocked off Laurel Krebsbach and Annie Mahoney, 8-2.

Gustavus Adolphus picked up a point at second doubles, but Sarah Torrence and Katy Barenholtz held off Sidney Dirks and Maddie Lindstrom for an 8-4 win and the clinching point.

Geppner closed out an outstanding two days at the Midwest Invitational.  The junior went 3-0 in singles action.  Her weekend was highlighted by a three-set win over the No. 2 ranked player in the region, Theresa Petraskova of Washington University.  Last night she knocked off Carelton's Bridget Doyle in straight sets and today she came through with a three-set win over Krebsbach.

Denison will return to action on Friday when they travel to Oberlin College for a 4:30 p.m. against the nationally ranked Yeowomen.
