The Denison women's tennis team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference slate with a 9-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon inside the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio. With the win, the Big Red extends its current winning streak to eight.
DU jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of dominating performances at first and third doubles. The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Marcell and Kelsey Geppner improved to 5-0 on the year following an 8-1 win over Meghan Guthrie and Alexandra Webb. At the third flight, freshmen Frances Hinkamp and Eleni Coleman posted an 8-2 decision over Eden Towers and Olivia Ozanne.
At second doubles, sophomore Heather Abzug and rookie Emma Forman were in a battle with Whitney Lonnemann and Ellie Magner. Trailing 8-7 through 15 points, the DU duo tied the match at 8-8 forcing a tiebreaker set. Forman and Abzug won the tiebreaker in dominating fashion (7-2) to secure the doubles sweep.
The Big Red won all six singles flights convincingly to pick up their fifth shutouts of the season. Geppner and first-year Katy Barenholtz posted 6-0, 6-0 victories at second and fifth singles. Forman and Sarah Torrence won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Marcell improve to 2-2 at the top flight following a 6-0, 6-1 win over Webb, while Abzug took down Magner at fourth singles (6-3, 6-1).
Denison improves to 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in the NCAC West, while the Bishops fall to 1-8 and 0-1 in divisional play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Walsh for a 10 a.m. match.
