Denison stings Yellow Jackets

Heather Abzug picked up her second singles win of the year against BW.

The Big Red women's tennis team picked up their fifth-consecutive victory and third shutout of the season following a 9-0 win over Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday in Hilton Head, S.C.

Denison opened the match with a dominating performance in doubles play. The team of senior Alex Marcell and junior Kelsey Geppner, the reigning NCAC Player of the Week, blanked Rebecca Mittler and Kelsey Blatt at the top flight.  With the win, the veteran duo improved to 2-0 at first doubles.

DU completed the doubles sweep behind a pair of freshman teams.  Taylor Hawkins and Audrey Fitzpatrick took down the Baker sisters, Mackenzi and Morgan, 8-1, while Emma Forman and Meg Chiumento got back in the win column with an 8-2 decision over Mackenzie Donalson and Whitney Yoder.

Because the start of the match was delayed by rain, the singles flights were decided by one eight-game pro set.  Hawkins defeated Rebecca Mittler 8-3 at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Heather Abzug knocked off Blatt at second singles, 8-5.

Flights three through six were all won by Big Red rookies.  Katy Barenholtz improved to 4-1 on the year, while Sarah Torrence and Frances Hinkamp both secured their second victories of the season.  Eleni Coleman notched her first collegiate singles victory after posting an 8-5 win over Mackenzie Baker.

Denison improves to 5-2, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-6.  The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Rhodes at 9 a.m.
