The Denison Big Red dropped its first contest of the season, 9-0, to the California University of Pa., the No. 8 ranked squad in Division II, on Sunday in South Park, Pa.
The Vulcans took a commanding lead after sweeping doubles competition. At the first flight, senior Alex Marcell and first-year Audrey Fitzpatrick suffered an 8-0 setback to the eighth-best doubles team in all of Division II. The freshmen No. 3 doubles team of Meg Chiumento and Emma Forman almost knocked off Jesse Burrell and Maxime Colen before dropping an 8-6 decision.
Cal U won all six singles flights, five of which came in straight sets. After dropping a 6-1 decision in the first set of fifth singles flight, Chiumento rebounded with a dominating 6-0 victory. However, Burrell squeaked out a 7-5 decision in the final set to defeat Chiumento.
The Big Red falls to 0-1, while the Vulcans improve to 2-2. Denison returns to the court on Saturday against third-ranked Chicago. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
