First-year Taylor Hawkins opened her collegiate career with a perfect 6-0 mark at the Oberlin College Invitational this past weekend. As a team, the Big Red went a combined 22-12 in their first competition of the fall season.
Hawkins teamed with senior Alex Marcell to post a 3-0 record in doubles play over the weekend. On Friday, the duo edged Case Western Reserve's Taylor Sweeney and Michelle Djohan, 8-6. Hawkins and Marcell captured their second win of the invitational with a dominating 8-2 decision over the Yeowomen's Farah Leclercq and Grace Porter. On the final day, the Big Red tandem doubled up Erika Lim and Marianne Bonnano from Case Western Reserve.
In singles play, Hawkins also went 3-0 following three-consecutive straight-set victories. On Saturday the rookie defeated Sweeney (6-2, 6-0) and Allegheny's Tiffany Kollah (7-5, 6-1). Hawkins closed out the play with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Leclercq.
Also posting perfect singles records were first-year players Meg Chiumento, Emma Forman and Lauren Smith. Chiumento picked up straight-set victories over Kollah (7-5, 6-1) and Bonanno (6-2, 7-5) on Saturday before winning a three-set battle against Lim (5-7, 6-4, 10-4). Forman defeated Taryn Stromback (6-3, 6-4) and Carly Olmstead (0-6, 6-0, 10-6) from Ohio Northern, and also topped Kenyon's Lydia Winkler in straight sets (6-0, 7-6). Smith finished with a 2-0 mark after knocking off Bonanno (6-4, 6-4) and Rebecca Mittler (6-4, 6-1) from Baldwin Wallace.
The Big Red returns to action at the ITA Central Regional Championship hosted by Washington University-St. Louis. The four-day tournament begins on Sept. 28.
