The Denison women's team dropped a hard fought 4-3 decision to Division I Dayton on Friday night at the Graul Tennis Complex in Dayton, Ohio.
The Big Red took the early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Senior Sarah Short and junior Alex Marcell improved to 9-2 at first doubles after posting an 8-5 win over Claire McNulty and Maureen Stevens. At the second flight, Kate Westenberger and Heather Abzug logged an 8-3 victory over Sammi Hornbarger and Victoria Marchant, while Courtney Steiner and Lilianna Broussalian evened their record at No. 3 doubles following an 8-7 win.
After dropping all three doubles matches, the Flyers rallied to win four of six singles flights to win the match. Short and Steiner posted the two DU victories at first and sixth singles, respectively. Short captured her fifth-consecutive win following a 6-4, 6-3 decision over McNulty, while Steiner's 6-0, 6-1 victory was her fourth-straight.
Denison falls to 4-6 on the year, while Dayton improves to 3-12. The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 5 p.m. match against Kenyon.
