Denison falls in ITA backdraw

Sarah Short won with Alex Marcell at No. 1 doubles.
Sarah Short won with Alex Marcell at No. 1 doubles.

Denison suffered a 7-2 loss to No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the backdraw of the 2012 ITA Indoor Tennis Championship from Greencastle, Ind.  The Big Red were trailing 2-0 after CMS took second and third doubles but DU's Sarah Short and Alex Marcell responded with an 8-4 win over Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang.

In singles play Claremont prevailed at No. 6 due to a scratch by Denison and Lim topped Short in straight-sets at No. 1.  DU rebounded with a win at No. 2 singles when Marcell topped Huang after Huang was forced to retire due to an illness.  The match would be closed out at third, fourth and fifth singles where Kate Westenberger, Heather Abzug and Courtney Steiner all fell.

The loss dropped Denison to the seventh-place match against Johns Hopkins where they suffered a 5-1 defeat on Saturday night.  Short and Marcell logged the lone win against the Blue Jays at the first doubles flight.
