GRANVILLE, Ohio-- KT Kustritz was a part of three victories and three NCAA 'B' cut performances on Saturday at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Despite 20 top-3 swims, the Big Red suffered a 184.5-115-5 loss to Division I Eastern Michigan.
Kustritz got things going in the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay. She teamed with Casey Kirby, Maddie Hopkins and Gabriella Nutter to post a 'B' cut time of 1:44.76. This year's provisional qualifying standard set by the NCAA is 1:45.69. Kustritz' breaststroke split in the event was 28.07 which led all competitors.
In the 100 breast, Kustritz was the winner with a 'B' cut time of 1:02.17. Her career-best in the event is 1:01.46 set at last year's Miami Invitational. Following in second place was Kate Mesaros in 1:05.78 while Ellen Higdon took fourth in 1:08.68.
Kustritz returned to win the 200 breaststroke by seven seconds as her time of 2:18.17 was also a 'B' cut. Mesaros was the runner-up once again in 2:25.96 and Higdon placed fifth in 2:33.34.
Denison's fourth event win on the afternoon came in the 3-meter dive as Allison Fitzgerald posted a six-dive score of 241.35 to win the event. Naomi Clayton finished second at 221.40 while Emma Weber placed fourth with a score of 211.65.
On the 1-meter board, Fitzgerald took home second place with a score of 249.75. Clayton was fifth at 202.35 and Weber took sixth at 199.28.
Halli Garza locked up second place in the 200 fly after touching in 2:06.04. She was followed in third and fourth place, respectively by Eva Jorn (2:07.93) and Zoe Whelan (2:08.08). In the 200 IM, Garza tied for third place with a time of 2:10.36. Bridget Horton picked up a point in fifth place with a time of 2:12.98.
Nutter posted second-place showings in the 50 and 100 freestyles. In the 50, she hit the wall in 24.28 and followed that with a time of 52.95 in the 100. First-year Mia Chiappe placed fifth in the 100 free in 53.80.
Kirby placed third and Bridget Horton was fifth in the 100 backstroke as Kirby touched in 57.97 and Horton logged a time of 59.49.
Erica Hsu led DU in the 200 backstroke (3rd – 2:07.34) and the 200 free (4th – 1:56.16). Horton and Hannah Rusinko followed in fourth and fifth place respectively in the 200 back while Rusinko posted a fifth-place showing in the 200 free.
In the 100 fly, Hopkins finished in 57.96 to take home second place. Angela Le was third in 58.32.
The meet was capped off by the 400 free relay team of Kirby, Kustritz, Nutter and Michaela Morrison who took silver with a time of 3:33.84.
Denison returns to action on Friday, November 3 when they travel to Columbus for a dual meet against Ohio State University. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
