GAMBIER & GRANVILLE-- Denison women's swimming and diving opened the season with a victory at the Kenyon Swimming Relays and Denison Diving Relays. The Big Red totaled 160 points which tied Kenyon College for first place in the combined standings.
On the swimming side, DU captured three event championships, finishing first in the 200 backstroke relay, the 3x500 freestyle relay and the 400 IM relay.
Senior Carolyn Kane was a member of two of those relays as she anchored the 200 back relay along with Casey Kirby, Angela Le and Jacquelyn Kurkjian. The team posted a winning time of 1:44.92 as Kane turned in a 25.59 split on her 50 back anchor leg.
DU also posted four second-place finishes at the Kenyon Swimming Relays. In the 200 medley relay, Kirby, Kustritz, Carolyn Kane and Elizabeth Kane touched in 1:45.39. Kate Mesaros, Kustritz, Ellen Higdon and Gabriella Nutter teamed up for the 200 breaststroke relay and finished in 2:02.73.
In the 500 crescendo relay, Kirby, Carolyn Kane, Alex Elizeus and Costley posted a time of 4:36.14. The runner-up finishes were rounded out by Carolyn Kane, Kirby, Costley and Elizabeth Kane in the 200 freestyle relay as they touched in 1:37.72.
Back in Granville, Denison's duo of Allison Fitzgerald and Emma Weber posted a score of 478.00 to outdistance their teammates, Eva Vivero and Naomi Clayton in the 1-meter diving relay. Clayton and Vivero finished with a score of 421.
On the 3-meter board, Fitzgerald and Weber bested Clayton and Katherine Hennigan of Denison, 472.10-409.25.
Denison will return to action next Saturday, October 22, when they travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan for a dual meet against Division I Eastern Michigan.
