WHEATON, Ill.--  Kelly O'Neill broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute and Maggie Armstrong added the eventual game-winner in the 74th minute as Denison handed Whitworth (Wash.) a 2-1 defeat at Wheaton College's Bob Baptista Invitational.

In the first half, Denison outshot Whitworth 8-5 and put four shots on goal that were turned away by Pirate keeper Jenna Rogers.

In the second half, Whitworth made a change in goal and the Denison offense got to work.  After a quick save by Denison's Jenny Herold in the first minute of the period, the Big Red flipped the field.  On DU's third corner kick in the span of two minutes, Grace Murray sent a ball into the box that was headed in by O'Neill for Denison's first goal of the match.

Over the next 19 minutes, DU outshot Whitworth 7-3.  In the 74th minute, Phoebe Gilbert took a corner kick that was momentarily cleared before the Big Red's Brianna Lisbon took possession.  From the edge of the goal, Lisbon slipped a pass to Armstrong who beat the keeper for the second goal of the match.

In the 82nd minute, an offside call on Denison gave the ball back to the Pirates.  One minute later, McKenzie Hemp scored to cut their deficit to one with 7:03 on the clock.

With just over four minutes remaining, Whitworth's Arielle Van Peursem attempted a shot that sailed wide.  That would be the Pirates' final scoring opportunity of the match.

With the win, Denison improves to 1-1 while Whitworth falls to 0-2.  Gilbert and Armstrong led Denison with four shots and two shots on goal, apiece.  The Big Red outshot the Pirates 22-11 and dominated corner kicks, 8-1.  Herold posted four saves in goal for Denison.  Whitworth's Sienna Tanner took the loss after allowing two goals while making three saves in 45 minutes.  Rogers tallied four saves and did not allow a goal in her 45 minutes of action in the first half.

Denison will return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 6 when they travel to nearby Westerville, Ohio for their annual non-league match with Otterbein University.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
