In the final week of the regular season, the Big Red women's soccer team picked up a key 4-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Tuesday night at Fred Shults Field in Oberlin, Ohio.
The Big Red offense peppered the Oberlin goal for almost the entire 45 minutes of the opening half. DU unloaded 17 shots in the first period with 10 of those attempts landing on goal. On the flip side, the Denison defense limited the Yeowomen to just two attempts. Oberlin's one shot on goal was easily scooped up by senior goalie Andrea Karl.
After firing six shots towards the OC net, the Big Red attack finally broke through after an Oberlin foul in the box. The infraction by the Yeowomen granted Denison its second penalty kick attempt of the season. Senior Jocelyn Festle stepped up to the penalty dot and ripped a shot past Oberlin keeper Kate Frost for the game's first goal. Festle's six goal of the season came at 12:36.
The Big Red maintained their one-goal lead until the 38th minute when sophomore Andrea Witte sent a cross from the right side that found junior Maddy Regan who buried a shot into the right side of the goal. The junior's first goal of the season doubled Denison's lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the 71st minute of play when Denison scored off its 13th corner attempt of the match. Sophomore transfer Logan Berlet's corner kick found freshman Isabel Mularoni who sent a header past Frost for DU's third score of the night. Mularoni's first-collegiate score came at 70:57.
Denison junior defender Allison Scarlott put the final stamp on the win with her first-career goal in the 89th minute of play. After a corner kick by Witte was momentarily cleared out by the Oberlin defense, Scarlott ripped a shot from the top of the box that found the upper right corner of the goal.
The Big Red outshot the Yeowomen 28-2, including a commanding 15-1 advantage in shots on target. DU also attempted 16 corners compared to just two by the home team. The aggressive Denison offense was also whistled offsides nine times.
Witted finished with a team-high five shots and an assist, while Festle and Abby Kerbaugh each had four attempts. Defenders Mularoni and Scarlott each scored on their only shots of the game, while Regan also found the back of the net on her lone attempt. Karl needed to make just one save en route to her 29th career shutout. Frost made nine saves in 77+ minutes for Oberlin.
DU improves to 8-7-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the NCAC, while the Yeowomen fall to 4-13 and 0-7 in league action. The Big Red closes out the regular season on Saturday when they host DePauw University on Senior Day in Granville. Match time from Barclay-Thomsen Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
