Ohio Northern's Sami Atkinson converted a penalty kick in the 104th minute and that was enough to push the Polar Bears to a 2-1 victory over the Denison Big Red from the ONU Soccer Field in Ada, Ohio.
After Ohio Northern took an early 1-0 lead, Denison managed to even the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute when Jocelyn Festle tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Festle's shot from the right side of the box caromed off the left post and found the back of the net.
DU would take one additional shot over the final 36 minutes, but in the first overtime period the Big Red would crank up the offense. After consecutive corner kicks, Andrea Witte sent a shot over the goal. Minutes later, Festle would fire off two shots that were blocked and wide of the goal.
With 6:40 remaining in the second overtime, a foul was called on the Big Red in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to ONU. Atkinson connected on the goal, her third of the season, sending Denison home with a 3-3 record.
The Polar Bears held a slight edge in shots, 15-12. Denison attempted nine corner kicks to Ohio Northern's five. DU goalkeeper Andrea Karl finished with two saves while Ohio Northern's Emily Bordict posted three stops.
Denison will look to get back on track this Saturday (Sept. 21) when they travel to Centre College for a 1 p.m. start against the Colonels.
