Hope College scored three second-half goals to erase a one-goal deficit and knock off the Denison Big Red, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in Granville.
Following a 20 minute feeling out process, the Big Red struck for the first goal of the game when sophomore transfer Logan Berlet touched a pass back to Jocelyn Festle who ripped a shot into the lower left 90 from roughly 20 yards out. Festle's first goal of the season gave DU the early edge. The Flying Dutch fired five more shots toward the Denison net, but the Big Red held on to their one-goal lead through 45 minutes of play.
Hope quickly responded in the second half when Raisa Yewah chipped a shot over goalie Andrea Karl and into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
The score remained tied for the next 30 minutes until Yewah struck again. In the 83rd minute, the Hope forward fired the ball off a Big Red defender and into the goal to give the Flying Dutch a 2-1 advantage. Seven minutes later, Nora Kirk closed the door when she dribbled to the top of the box and rifled a shot into the upper left 90.
Hope held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in the second period. Berlet, Festle, Anne Denz and Jessica Skelly each recorded two shots for the Big Red, while Kirk unloaded four shots. Karl finished with four saves, while Dutch keeper Lauren Kooy recorded one save en route to the win.
Denison falls to 0-1 on the year, while Hope improves to 1-0. The Big Red returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host Wilmington at 3 p.m.
