Mount Saint Mary scored a goal in each half en route to earning a 2-0 victory over Denison on Sunday afternoon in Newburgh, N.Y.
After 26 scoreless minutes, the Knights broke through for the first goal of the game at 26:05 when Melissa Guillemette found Robe Shanice. That goal held strong as the home team took a 1-0 advantage into the break. In the 49th minute, Kim Castro gave Mount Saint Mary a two-goal lead off an assist from Lindsey Oro.
The Knight defense stymied the DU attack, holding the Big Red to five shots in 90 minutes. On the flip side, the Mount Saint Mary offense attempted 18 shots, including nine on goal. The home team held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks and committed eight fouls compared to five by Denison.
Denison junior keeper Andrea Karl made seven stops in 90 minutes, while Knight goalie Jacquelyn Mancini stopped two shots on net. Kate Ludwig paced the attack with two shots, while Andrea Witte, Jocelyn Festle and Joy Dennis all logged a shot.
The Big Red falls to 3-9-1 on the year, while the Knights improve to 12-2-1. DU resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday against Wittenberg. Match time from Barclay-Thomsen Field is slated for 7 p.m.
