GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In a game that saw nine lead changes, including six in the fourth quarter, the Oberlin Yeowomen defeated the Denison women's basketball team 51-46 on Wednesday night at Livingston Gym.

After falling behind by seven in the opening quarter, the Big Red engineered an 18-3 run that covered over 12 minutes and sent DU into the intermission with a 24-16 lead. The surge featured seven points by senior post Jordan Holmes and five more from freshman guard Alison Schafer. Sophomore Valesha Province added four tallies, while senior Emily Krumpe also knocked down a jumper. In addition to building an eight-point lead, the Big Red defense held the Oberlin offense to just two points in the second period.

Province opened up the second half with a three-pointer off an assist from senior point guard Erica Holmes, giving Denison its largest lead of the game at 27-16. After trading free throws, the Big Red maintained their 11-point advantage with just under nine to play in the stanza. However, a 10-0 burst by the Yeowomen that spanned almost three and a half minutes shrunk the deficit to one midway through the third.

DU broke up the run with five unanswered points before another 7-0 surge gave OC its first lead of the half at 34-33. The two squads entered the fourth tied at 34-34 following a Province free throw inside the final 30 seconds of the quarter.

The lead was tossed back-and-forth throughout the first part of the final period. Down 41-40, the Yeowomen orchestrated a 10-2 run that turned the one-point deficit into a seven-point advantage with 21 seconds to play. Schafer buried a three with 13 seconds on the clock to closed the margin to 50-46. However, a free throw by Sarah Thompson on the ensuing possession secured the Oberlin victory.

The Yeowomen converted 41 percent (18-for-44) from the field, while DU shot 29 percent (19-for-66) from the floor. The Big Red held a 22-20 edge in the paint and a 46-35 advantage on the glass.

Jordan Holmes collected her fourth double-double of the season after scoring 14 points and pulling down 16 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Province chipped in 12 points, while Schafer finished with 11 points and five boards. Erica Holmes dished out three assists, while Krumpe and Lauren Hofer had six and five rebounds, respectively.

Alex Stipano and Olivia Canning each finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Stipano also handed out three assists, while Canning blocked two shots. Thompson, Abby Andrews and Tyler Parlor had six rebounds each to co-lead the Oberlin.

Oberlin improves to 3-4 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in NCAC action, while the loss drops Denison to 2-7 and 1-1 in conference play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Wittenberg. Tip-off from Springfield, Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.
