GRANVILLE -- The Denison women's basketball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 42-35 victory over rival Kenyon on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a five-game skid for the Big Red while also bringing a halt to the Ladies' four-game winning streak.
Following a tightly contested opening half, Kenyon entered the locker room with a slim 20-18 lead. Senior Emily Krumpe tied the game for the sixth time with a jumper one minute into the third quarter. Jessica Gerber regained the lead for Kenyon after converting the offensive put back, while Charlotte Bussema added another point at the charity stripe.
Trailing by a pair with less than three minutes to go in the third, senior Erica Holmes drained a three from the wing to give Denison a 24-23 edge with 2:45 on the clock. On the next Big Red possession, freshman Addie Buzas scored off an assist from senior Gaby Mehringer. Krumpe continued the run on the following trip down the floor with a bucket that pushed the DU lead to 28-23. After another one-and-done by the Ladies, freshman Lauren Hofer pushed the run to 10-0 with a layup inside the final minute.
A jumper by Paige Matijasich and a triple from Bailey Dominguez capped off an 8-0 run that shrunk the margin back to one at 30-29 with eight and a half remaining in regulation. Another surge by the Big Red rebuilt a seven-point lead before a 6-1 run made it a one-possession game with 1:45 to go.
Krumpe answered the Sidney Cera free throw with a clutch jumper at the 1:20 mark that pushed DU's lead back to 39-35. The Big Red iced the game in the final minute with a 3-for-4 showing at the foul line, which included a pair of Mehringer points with 30.7 on the clock.
The Denison offense converted 34 percent (15-for-44) from the field, while their defense limited the Ladies to a 22 percent (13-for-60) conversion rate. The Big Red outrebounded Kenyon 40-38 and outscored them in the paint 12-10.
Krumpe paced DU with 11 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals, while Jordan Holmes finished with a game-high 16 rebounds. Erica Holmes chipped in seven points, while freshman Alison Schafer had three steals and four boards. Valesha Province also handed out three assists.
Dominguez led the Ladies with 14 points, while Lane Davis grabbed eight rebounds and Cera came away with four steals.
With the win, Denison improves to 2-6 on the season and a perfect 1-0 in NCAC play, while the loss drops Kenyon to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Big Red wraps up their three-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Oberlin. Tip-off from Livingston Gym is slated for 7:30 p.m.
