Denison goes 1-1 in the desert

The Big Red closed out the 2012 D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. with a 69-55 victory over Lake Forest College at the South Point Arena.

Despite shooting 35 percent from the field, Denison leaned on its defensive and that paid off.  DU forced their opponents into 27 turnovers that resulted in 36 of the Big Red's 69 points.  In the first half, Denison took a 37-24 lead thanks to nine points by Mary Margaret Habel while Lake Forest committed 15 turnovers to Denison's one miscue.

In the second half DU outscored Lake Forest by one, but that was still enough to earn the 14-point victory.  Four players scored in double-digits for Denison, led by Serafina Nuzzo's 16 points, five assists and six rebounds.  Habel followed with 15 points in 25 minutes while Kyli Parker added 12 points and three steals off the bench.  Gretchen Staubach rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.

Lake Forest was led by Michelle Ricolcol's 13 points.

Denison improves to 6-5 while Lake Forest drops to 4-6.  DU will return to action on Friday (Jan. 4) with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
