CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Big Red suffered two losses at Thomas More on Thursday afternoon. The Saints shutout Denison 8-0 in game one before rallying for a 10-9 walk-off win in the finale.
Look to earn a split after dropping a decision in the opener, the Big Red found themselves in a 5-0 hole at the conclusion of two innings. DU made a serious dent in the deficit thanks to a four-run fourth frame. Lauren Secaras got Denison on the board with a solo homer to open the inning. Freshman Montana Schug and junior Mckinly Vazquez each provided run scoring singles with two outs, while Ricki Asher drew a bases loaded walk that scored Schug.
Denison evened the score in the fifth when Katie Folkers knocked in Laura Bagan with a base hit to left. Schug followed with her second RBI single, this time scoring Lindsey Clemson from third. With the bases full, senior Ryan Lee dropped a base hit into center that scored Folkers. Thomas More pulled to within one at 7-6 following a solo run in the home half of the fifth.
Schug continued her breakout game with her third-straight RBI single to add an insurance run for DU. The freshman's third single plated senior Kerry Hager from second. The Big Red built up a 9-6 advantage when Vazquez plated Folkers with a base hit up the middle. The lead was short lived as Thomas More manufactured three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 9-9.
In the home half of the seventh, Secaras, who came into pitch in the sixth, quickly retired the first two batters. Laura Finke reached on a two-out infield single and swiped second to move into scoring position. Whitney Quillen brought the game two an end with a double down the right line that scored Finke.
Schug finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Folkers was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Vazquez also had two hits and two RBIs from the lead off position. Secaras (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up the final three runs of the game on five hits in relief.
In the opener, the Saints scored four runs in both the first and fifth innings to bring the game to an end. Andrea Gahan scored the game-ending run on a fielding miscue with two outs. Alix DeDreu improved to 13-2 on the year after tossing a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts and a walk. DeDreu also went 1-for-2 with two runs at the plate. Gahan was 2-for-2 at the dish with two runs and a game-high five RBIs. Kenzie Dickerson also drove in a pair and scored another on the strength of two hits.
Sarah Herold (9-4) suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on six hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Asher was 2-for-2 at the plate, while Bagan and Vazquez had Denison's other two hits.
The Big Red moves to 23-11 on the year, while the Saints improve to 26-8. Denison resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they take on Hiram. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
