Denison closed out its 2013 season on Monday in Ada, Ohio by splitting a twinbill with Ohio Northern University. The Big Red captured game one, 4-1, but suffered a 6-3 setback in game two to end their season with a 23-15 record.
Despite finishing in a four-way tie for second-place in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 10-6, the Big Red found themselves on the short end each tiebreaker scenario, snapping an eight-year streak of advancing to the conference tournament. Despite missing the postseason, Denison did post its ninth-straight 20+ win season.
In the 4-1 triumph by the Big Red, Rebecca Dyer went the distance, earning her 13th win of the season. She struck out six while scattering five hits over seven innings. The DU offense pounded out 10 hits, led by Gretchen Staubach (2-for-3), Rachel Laughlin (2-for-4) and Jess Robertson (2-for-4).
In game two, Denison scored two runs in the seventh inning thanks to a 2-run homer by Staubach, but the rally would die there. Jessica Camper pitched the first six innings for ONU to earn the win. Kelsey Hager took the loss for DU. She gave up six runs in six innings while walking five and striking out two.
Denison's other run came in the third inning off a Robertson solo shot that sailed over the wall and on to the batting cages in left field.
Robertson ends the season as the Big Red's leader at the plate with a .349 average and a team-high 14 doubles and 25 RBIs. Dyer struck out 161 batters in 134.1 innings pitched while posting an ERA of 1.72.
