The Big Red softball team took a pair of games from North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin on Tuesday afternoon in Granville. Denison won game one 5-2 and took the nightcap, 4-1.
Denison scored single runs in the second and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead in the opening game of the doubleheader. Junior Gretchen Staubach scored on a two-base Oberlin miscue in the second, while a wild pitch allowed Julie Rooney to cross the dish in the third frame.
With two on and two out in the fifth, senior Jess Robertson roped a double to the gap in right center that scored junior Rachel Laughlin and sophomore Emily Lipsitz. The Yeowomen scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit in half, but another wild pitch by Oberlin pitcher Emily King gave senior Rosie Glaser the opportunity to score.
Junior hurler Rebecca Dyer picked up her fifth win of the season after allowing two runs, scattering five hits and striking out nine in seven innings of work. King took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits with five Ks and three walks.
In game two, the Big Red offense struck early with three runs in the first frame. Meghan Edwards laced a double to left that knocked in Rooney, while a wild pitch opened the door for Lipsitz to score from third. Edwards eventually came around to score the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Staubach.
Oberlin shrunk the deficit with a single run in the fifth, but DU got that run back in the sixth when Rooney plated pinch runner Ellen McDevitt-Stredney on a sacrifice fly to center. Junior Kelsey Hager won her sixth decision of the year in game two. Hager gave up one run on seven hits with a season-high eight strikeouts.
Rooney and Robertson both went 3-for-6 with two doubles against Oberlin. Rooney scored twice and drove in a run, while Robertson had two RBIs. Lipsitz and Edwards also logged two hits, including a double, in the second game.
Denison improves to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in NCAC play, while the Yeowomen fall to 2-12 and 0-4 in league action. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Case Western Reserve. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
