GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Denison closed out the first day of the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship in eighth place with six points on Friday.

Reigning champion Ohio Wesleyan leads Wabash by just two points 68-66. The Bishops ended the Little Giants' string of five-consecutive conference titles last year with a one-point win (210-209).

Freshman Bryce Stricker led the Big Red on Friday scoring in two field events. Stricker opened the championship event with a seventh-place showing in the shot put with a heave of 44'9.75". Shortly after scoring in the shot put, the freshman thrower returned to the circle for the hammer throw. Stricker scored once again, this time placing fifth with a toss of 148'4". Stricker's classmate Austin McManus also had a personal-best day, setting a new PR with a mark of 105'9". McManus' performance was a 6'8" improvement on his previous record.

In preliminary competition, the duo of Niall Clancey and Zach Munn both qualified for Saturday's final in the 800-meter run. Clancey earned the fourth seed in the finals after clocking in with the third-fastest preliminary time at 1:58.86. Munn occupied the final spot for the finals with a time of 2:00.89. Freshman Isaac Andrews narrowly missed making the finals in the 400-meter dash after placing ninth in the prelims. Andrews' time of 51.44 was two tenths of a second behind the final spot Wittenberg sophomore Ryan Hale (51.24).

Freshman Jack Ruddy also finished one spot away from the finals, taking ninth in the 400 hurdles after crossing the line in 59.32. Sophomore Isaac Reed had a personal-best showing in the 110 hurdles, clocking in at 15.39. Reed's time was 37 hundredths of a second faster than his prior PR and it moved him into seventh place on the school's top performers list.

The final day of the 2017 NCAC Outdoor Championship will take place on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind. on the campus of DePauw University. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., while the running events are slated to start at 2:25 p.m.
