Denison senior Dee Salukombo won the men's 10,000 meters highlighting the first day of the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship from Meadville, Pa.
For Salukombo, this marked the first time the multi-time All-American had competed in this event at the conference championship. Salukombo completed the 10K in 31:23.29 for the fourth NCAC Outdoor championship of his career.
He will return to action on Saturday to run in the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters.
In addition to Salukombo's win, DU got a pair of outstanding performances from senior sprinter Chris Roth. All season long, Roth's times have continued to improve and in Friday's preliminaries he posted career-best times in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. In the 100 he topped his previous career best by nearly 0.2 after turning in a prelim time of 10.93. Roth returned in the 200 with the best preliminary time in 21.78.
Senior Wendell Taylor posted a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 42'9" and he followed in the discus with a 10th place finish in 112'8". John Bute followed with an 11th place finish in the shot put and a 12th place showing in the discus.
The Big Red did suffer a major blow in the 400 meter dash when junior Dimonde Hale was unable to finish his preliminary race after suffering an injury. It is unknown whether he will able able to participate in Saturday's relay finals.
Overall, DU totaled 15 points on Friday and they sit in sixth-place overall. Wabash leads the championship with 91 points.
