The Denison men's tennis team rattled off three-straight singles victories to complete a come-from-behind win over Allegheny in the third place match of the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday in Granville, Ohio.
Sam Stephenson and Alexander Hurtuk put the Gators in front 1-0 with an 8-3 decision over Casey Cempre and Andrew Marczak at second doubles. That loss was just the seventh for the DU tandem in 28 matches together this season. The Big Red evened the match at 1-1 with an 8-5 victory at No. 3. The pairing of Jackson O'Gorman-Bean and Jeffrey LoDuca secured their 13th win of the year and their 11th at the third flight on Sunday.
At No. 1 doubles, Juan Guerra and Grant Veltman suffered a heart-breaking 9-8 (7-5) setback to Patrick Cole and Tyler Triolo. The team of Guerra and Veltman ended the year with an 11-7 record at the top flight.
Trailing 2-1, Veltman pulled the match even with a shutout win over Charlie Murphy at fourth singles. Allegheny grabbed its third lead of the match when Cole won a straight-set decision over Guerra at No. 1. Once again trailing by a point, the Big Red won three-consecutive wins flights to rally for the win. Marczak got things going with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Triolo at second singles. O'Gorman-Bean followed with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 decision over Hurtuk.
Junior Graham Gettel earned the match-clinching point at sixth singles. After cruising to a 6-2 win over Stephenson in the first set, Gettel found himself tied 6-6. In the tie-breaker, Gettel edged Stephenson 9-7 to earn the straight-set win.
The Big Red closed out the 2014 season with a 14-7 record, while the Gators end the year with a 15-7 mark.
