Denison opens season at Kenyon

The Denison men's tennis team opened its fall season at the Kenyon College Invitational this weekend in Gambier, Ohio.

The Big Red saw four individuals and two doubles teams finish in the top 10 in their respective brackets on Sunday.  The team of sophomore Graham Gettel and freshman John Hayes battled through the "C" bracket en route to earning a berth in the championship match.  The DU duo opened play with an 8-6 victory over Allegheny's Daniel Conroy and Tyler Triolo.  Gettel and Hayes followed that up with a 9-8 win over Carlos Jaque and Christian McCauley from Walsh.  In the championship match, the Big Red tandem suffered an 8-5 setback to Gators' Alex Hurtuk and Thomas Manning.

Grant Veltman and Juan Guerra also had a strong showing after going 2-2 and finishing sixth in the Doubles "A" bracket.  After opening with an 8-6 win over Soren Zeliger and Callan Louis from Oberlin, the Denison team dropped an 8-4 decision to Case Western Reserve's Kyle Gerber and John Healey.  Veltman and Guerra advanced to the fifth-place match after posting an 8-3 victory over the Spartans' Will Drougas and Nicholas Howe.  In the fifth-place math, the DU team suffered a 9-7 setback to Case Western's Eric Klawitter and Christopher Krimbill.

In singles action, junior Andrew Marczak and sophomore Shankar Rajupet finished fifth in the "B" and "C" brackets, respectively.  Marczak opened with a three-set victory over Walsh's Pablo Cabezon (6-7, 7-6, 7-6).  After falling to Kenyon's Jacob Huber (6-2, 6-2), the junior moved into the fifth-place match following a default victory over teammate Brandon Larsen.  Marczak took fifth in his bracket after winning a 6-4, 6-4 decision of Healey.  Rajupet's route to a fifth-place finish started with a three-set win over Allegheny's Triolo (6-7, 6-3, 6-3).  Despite a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Davis Thrailkill of Kenyon, the sophomore rebounded with straight-set wins over the Spartans' Howe (6-4, 6-3) and Viswajit Simhadri (6-2, 6-2).

Also placing in the top 10 were sophomore Casey Cempre and Hayes.  Cempre took ninth in the Singles "A" bracket after stringing together three-consecutive wins over Oberlin's Charlie Marks (6-2, 6-2), Bridgewater's Evan Stack (6-2, 5-7, 11-9), and Allegheny's Patrick Cole (6-4, 6-4).  After falling to Manning in the first round of the "E" bracket, Hayes went on to defeat Wooster's Jacob Pine (6-1, 4-6, 10-7), Walsh's Chase Pucci (6-1, 6-1) and the Gators' Sam Stephenson.

Gettel also reached the semifinal round of the Singles "D" bracket after knocking off Nick Biniker of Wooster (6-3, 6-3) and Case Western's Alex Solove (6-2, 7-5).  The sophomore's run came up short following a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Kenyon's Andrew Herring.

Denison returns home for a 4 p.m. match against Ohio Dominican on Tuesday in Granville.
