Big Red, Gators battle in NCAC opener

Tom Cawood

The Big Red will take on Allegheny in the opening round of the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Kenyon on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Denison (13-4) received the third seed in the tournament after going 2-1 in NCAC West Division action, while the Gators (9-7) posted a 3-1 mark in the NCAC East.  The other three first round matches pit top-seeded Kenyon against an eighth seed to be determined, No. 4 seed Wittenberg against fifth-seeded Wabash, and second-seeded DePauw against No. 7 seed Oberlin.

DU has been paced this season by the senior quartet of Tom Cawood, Tyler Cempre, Tim Martin and Matt McErlean.  Cawood, ranked seventh in the Central Region, has gone an impressive 13-2 at the top singles flight and has won 11 of his last 12 matching, including four straight.

In doubles action, Cawood and Martin are a perfect 11-0 at the second flight.  Cempre and McErlean are ranked sixth in the region with a 16-4 overall record, including an 11-3 mark at No. 1 doubles.

Sunday's schedule will open the two back draw matches at 9 a.m. and continue with the tournament semifinals, beginning at approximately 11 a.m.  The fifth-place and seventh-place matches will begin at approximately 1 p.m., while the third-place match and championship match will kick off at approximately 3 p.m.
