Rookies lead Big Red to victory

Head coach Gregg Parini turned to his underclassmen in the final dual meet of 2012-13 and they came through in spades as DU rolled to a 139-87 win over Ohio Wesleyan.

Denison won nine events total and eight of those wins were locked up by a sophomore of first-year member of the Big Red.

Freshman Steffen Listerman was a two-time winner on Saturday.  He won the 200 IM in 2:00.24 and swam the backstroke on the winning 400 medley relay team along with fellow rookies Joe Brunk, Kevin Brinegar and Conrad Wuorinen.  The foursome touched in 3:34.96.

Freshman Andrew Rich posted a time of 2:02.73 to win the 200 butterfly while Ryan Fleming and Conner Downard won the 50 free and 1,000 free, respectively.  Fleming touched in 21.89 seconds while Downard earned the victory in the 1,000 with a time of 10:12.14.

DU sophomores Ben Snader and Dan Hellman were winners in the 100 free and 200 backstroke, respectively.  Snader won the 100 free in 48.71 seconds and Hellman covered the 200 back in 1:53.27.

In the diving events first-year Ben Lewis won the 1-meter board with a score of 276.05.  Senior Gabe Dixson posted the lone upperclassmen victory with his score of 331.20 in the 3-meter board.  Lewis followed in second-place with a score of 301.40.

Denison ends its dual meet season with a 6-1 record.  They will take next weekend off in preparation for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship that will take place on Feb. 13-16 in Canton, Ohio.  Denison has won four consecutive NCAC titles.
