Casarona’s OT goal secures NCAC win

Bob Casarona's OT goal capped off a 2-1 comeback victory on Senior Day.
Bob Casarona's OT goal capped off a 2-1 comeback victory on Senior Day.

Junior Bob Casarona's goal in the 98th minute gave Denison a key North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wabash on Senior Day in Granville, Ohio.

Denison found itself behind the eight ball late in the game as they trailed the Little Giants 1-0 with less than three to play.  After a back heal shot by Corey Ricketts was blocked aside, junior defender John Krentz came up with the game-tying goal from point blank range.  Krentz' first goal of the year forced the match into overtime.

In the first OT session, DU needed just one shot as Casarona dribbled to the center of the field and uncorked a shot into the upper right 90 from 25 yards out.  The junior's third goal of the season cleared the Big Red bench as the Big Red kept their NCAC Tournament hopes alive.

Despite offensive dominance in the opening 45 minutes, it was Wabash that struck for the first goal.  Jacob Nigh scored in the 40th minute off an assist from Ben Sia.  The Little Giants' 1-0 lead held up for the rest of the half.

The Big Red held a commanding 19-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on net.  Denison also attempted 13 corners compared to just four by Wabash.  DU keeper Matt Wagner made two stops on the afternoon, while Matt Paul stopped six shots for the Little Giants.

Denison improves to 7-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the NCAC, while Wabash falls to 3-11 and 1-4 in league play.  Denison returns to action on Tuesday when they host Wittenberg at 7 p.m.
