A pair of second-half goals powered Denison past Muskingum University, 3-1, on Wednesday evening in New Concord, Ohio.
The Muskies successfully utilized their first corner kick of the evening. After the initial shot attempt was blocked aside, Elias Matthews fired a shot into the back of the net. Matthews' first goal of the year came at 9:06.
Almost seven minutes later, Bob Casarona netted the qualizer for his second goal of the year. The junior buried a direct kick from 30 yards out at 16:05. Over the final 28 minutes of the period, the Big Red fired seven shots towards the Muskingum goal compared to just one by the home squad.
Sophomore forward JJ Dix broke the tie in the 71st minute off an assist from Casarona. The goal was Dix's second of the year. Mark Waterman improved to a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kick attempts in the 80th minute after the Muskies committed a foul in the box. The sophomore's third goal of the season all but secured the victory for DU.
The Big Red held a commanding 18-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Waterman and junior Jamie Wagner each logged four shots, while Casarona finished with three points. Junior keeper Matt Wagner made two saves for Denison, while Hunter Huffman posted five stops for the Muskies.
DU improves to 4-3-1 on the year, while Muskingum falls to 3-4-1. The Big Red resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they host conference rival Kenyon College at 4 p.m.
